A woman with a pot of coffee
Date:
1895Medium:
oil on canvasLocation:
Musee d'Orsay, Paris, FranceDimensions:
130.5 x 96.5The model of this portrait has never been precisely identified, but it appears to be one of the employees of the Cézanne family home near Aix en Provence.
Paul Cézanne used several models, but preferred to work with members of his family or other people he knew well. It is said that this was because he was shy and painted very slowly. Despite its proximity to the model, Woman with a Coffee Pot is a study of shapes rather than persons. The main elements of the painting - the woman's body and a cup with a teapot - are painted very simply with an emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines. This geometric approach is typical of Cubism. It is this work that heralds the shift in Cézanne's approach to art from Impressionism to Cubism.

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). French
Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations for the connection between the concept of 19th century paintings and the more radical 20th century (
especially Kubism). Picasso and Mattise even said that Cézanne is ‘the father of us all’. Cézanne used bright colours and small and delicate brush strokes. Here, you can find most of his later works - mostly studies and still lifes. Cézanne was interested in the simplification of natural forms to their geometric essence. He focused on perspective so that he would provoke a new aesthetic experience in the audience.
