Jules Chéret (1836-1933) He was a progressive Parisian artist and for his life’s work is nicknamed the father of the modern poster. His first poster was Orpheus in the Underworld. He further designed posters for the now world-famous Eugene Rimmel, then still known as a manufacturer of perfumes. From this contract, he was able to open his own lithographic firm. His posters are based on Victorian graphics. In 1890, he received the Jules Cherlet Legion of Honor for his contribution not only to art but mainly for the support of
industry and trade. His life work includes 1,000 posters from disciplines such as
circus, theater, products, medicines -
Pippermint, etc. He was a great inspiration to other artists, such as
Henri Toulouse Lautrec or the famous Czech artist
Alphons Mucha.
